Trekking Across the Great State of…Alaska! Really?

One of our favorite states to visit was far and away, Alaska! The people were tremendously friendly, very congenial to be around, and were willing to share the fun little factoids about their state. We did some things right on that trip, and we did some things wrong though. We’d love to go back soon if the opportunity presents itself.

This started as an opportunity for us to take a cruise with the Princess Cruise Lines that was “different” because we have several friends who have done Caribbean cruises but we wanted to do something different. An organization that we were a part of, at the time, was offering a one-week cruise on the Alaskan Inside Passage, and we took them up on it. It would be our first cruise!

On Ship Activities
Where do we start? There were so many options you easily could have stayed on the ship and had a great experience. Starting with the stage shows, and the shopping, if casinos were your game, exercise, and more were all widely scheduled and available throughout the experience. This doesn’t even begin with some of the “specialty” activities we were able to take advantage of. A “Behind the Scenes” Cooking Class with the Executive Chefs was one of our highlights. Seeing the behind the scenes of the food preparation and execution was, believe it or not, really interesting. As an end-of-tour goody, we all received an autograph cookbook from the ship with them signing in as we left the spaces we were in. With that, I almost left out the specialty restaurants too that you could take advantage of and not eat in the regular dining spaces. A steakhouse and more, the food was so good throughout the ship we didn’t take advantage of anywhere close to everything we wanted to.

One of the more interesting activities was a full-scale art auction that took place on board over the course of the entire trip. One of the onboard lounges was taken over at different points during the trip where, easily, over 100 pieces were distributed for patrons to explore. The auction would last for one hour and as many pieces as they could, they would go through. The hosts did a great job of integrating education, with auction, with fun and it was one of the highlight on-board experiences for us to take part in.

Excursions
Side trips in Alaska were amazing. We took advantage of a trip to the Glaciers, and Dog Sledding to name just a few. However, some of our best activities were things we did on our own. Trekking through the shopping area of Ketchikan or finding our way around Juneau on our own were side trips we enjoyed of our own creation.

Food, Food and more Food…
Get ready to eat, and eat, and eat. The different food offerings on the ship to trying out local restaurants too. We sampled our way through more different types of seafood, beef, unique varieties of served vegetables. We were afraid to leave the main dining area some nights because we never knew how good it would truly be just in there alone.

By our own choice, we opted to stay extra time in Seattle as well, the opening port for our cruise. We made our way to several museums, the Market, and the first Starbucks to name a few. It would have been great to make a Mariners game, but oh well 馃檪

A great time was had by all, and an adventure that we can certainly recommend.
